I originally got involved in art and design in college, after taking a drawing class “just for fun”. While in that class I discovered something I never knew I had: a talent for the visual arts. Within a semester I changed my major, and by the time I was at the start of my junior year at college, I was also providing local businesses with typesetting and layout services.
My first client was actually my boss at the time, who ran a restaurant in town. He had been complaining for months about how badly he needed to get his menus redesigned, and how he wanted to also create a take out menu. I had thought, at the time, “I’d love to help him. Too bad I don’t have my design degree yet!” My whole paradigm was that I wasn’t allowed to do anything until I had a piece of paper in my hands saying I’ve graduated (by the way, I wrote an article about this too, at Focus on the Family’s Boundless webzine, called A PhD in Life . You can read it here ). After speaking with my fellow art student and the good folks at the SBA, the next time I heard my boss complain about the menus, I found myself saying, “I’ll redo them for $50. I’m a graphic designer.” He hired me on the spot, and paid me out of the till immediately. An entrepreneur
was born.
I have since worked both at printing companies and as a freelancer for over 22 years.
On a personal note, I have been married to my honey for nearly 20 years, and am the proud mother of five teenagers. We live in rural Michigan for the time being, enjoying the country life and embracing simplicity mingled with the benefits of the 21st century.
I create all manner of web and graphic design from my cozy home office in my 110 year old farmhouse in Michigan’s thumb, sometimes moving my office to other locations including (but not limited to) my herb garden, my flower garden, the local Starbucks, and pretty much anywhere else I can get electricity and a wi-fi signal.
